Class Assignments
Covid Infodemic
I chose to showcase this social assignment because it's probably one of the most fun assignments I've ever done in any class! Just the fact that I got to make a TikTok for an assignment is really cool. I also think it's more effective and attention grabbing this way, while still getting the message across. I think this assignment speaks to all generations, even if TikTok is more geared toward teenagers.
Gen-Z Voter Challenge
Gen-Z voters are very important for this election. Although we only make up about 7% of the electorate, it is crucial that we use our voice to make the change we want to see in this country. Personally, I wasn’t very involved or interested in politics until Trump got elected. Then I started to hear more commentary from my parents, my friends, and even my teachers at school. I was still getting the hang of the issues for a while, but then 2020 came around. The coronavirus began, and I, along with many other Gen-Zer’s, saw the importance of this virus. We started to get more vocal on social media. When George Floyd was killed in late May, teenagers on social media began posting more and more about the issues. I became very vocal on my instagram story, as many others did. I started educating myself on the issues, as many others did. George Floyd’s death and the BLM movement was a turning point in the political activism of the Gen-Z population. From what we’ve seen from the statistics presented in “What We Know About Gen-Z So Far,” by Kim Parker and Ruth Igielnik, Gen-Z is more in favor of Joe Biden as President, than Donald Trump. The support for Biden dwindles as the population gets older, but the voter turnout usually increases with age. If Gen-Zers want to see Biden win, they have to get out to the polls. Even if some of the issues don’t affect the white and affluent voters, we have to think about our poor and minority population. They’re counting on us. I do think that social media is a big influence on this election. I’ve seen many people post social media threads about why it’s so important to vote, and what each candidate thinks about the major issues. I also see TikTok as a popular way to get voter’s attention. This is especially true when adults, like Minnesota State Senator Matthew Little, engage on Tiktok, because it definitely catches my eye when I see someone other than a teenager on the platform. I truly hope our younger generation will come out to vote, so we can build a better democracy.
I chose to showcase this assignment because I have a lot of personal experience and personal stake in this issue. Since election season started, I have been absolutely dying to vote. I wasn't as involved in politics until this year, with Covid-19 and the BLM movement. I wanted to feel like I had a voice in our government and our future, and I wanted to encourage my friends to feel the same way. I was (and still am) very active on social media about voting, politics, social issues, and things that I feel are important.
