I'm Minnie Stephenson and I'm a journalism major at the University of Maryland. I'm also in the Media, Self, and Society Scholars program. I'm originally from Marshfield, Massachusetts, and even though that's far away, UMD feels like home already. I've known for a long time that I wanted to be a journalism major, so I centered my college search around that. UMD came up as one of the top journalism schools in the country, so I knew it had to be an option.

       Once I got in, I was accepted into the Scholars program. I looked at the description of the Media Scholars program, and it seemed to offer everything I wanted and more. The Scholars program was a large part of why I chose to come to UMD. So far I love this program, and I've gotten to know some great people who share the same interests as me. It's special that this program brings together people of completely different majors as well. 

       I hope that in the next two years of Media Scholars I learn how to be more conscious of the media all around me, like social media, the news, and even TV and movies. Also, I know what I learn in Media Scholars will help me in the modern age of journalism, where media is becoming more and more prevalent in our world today. Looking past college, I hope both Media Scholars and UMD in general will prepare me for a successful career in journalism, especially through the media practicum, and other internship opportunities.
